About Jon Matson-Higgins

About Jon Matson-Higgins, Minister and Celebrant

I was born and raised in Peterborough and moved to London in 1992, where I worked in a demanding, high-profile management role. Over time, that lifestyle began to take a toll on my wellbeing and health, something that, sadly, is all too common.

This led me to make a life-changing decision. I stepped away from my career in London and moved to Brighton, choosing a calmer, more balanced way of living by the sea. Living on the edge of the South Downs National Park brought a sense of peace and clarity, allowing me to reconnect with what truly matters, including time with family and friends.

Sussex and Surrey Celebrant - Jon Matson-Higgins

Before moving to London, I trained as a nurse, although I quickly realised that path was not right for me. I later trained as a complementary therapist and went on to create a training school, where I became Principal and Senior Tutor. I held this role for 19 years, until January 2021. During this time, I developed a strong focus on palliative and end-of-life care, supporting individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

Alongside this, I gained valuable ceremonial experience as a verger at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, where I was involved in many weddings, funerals, and services. These experiences played a significant role in shaping the work I do today.

In 2024, I made the decision to return to Lincolnshire to be closer to my family.

Today, I am a fully qualified, full-time, ordained non-denominational Minister and Celebrant, providing personalised funeral services, memorial services, wedding ceremonies, and celebration of life ceremonies across Lincolnshire, Peterborough, and the surrounding areas.

In addition to my work with families and couples, I act as a mentor for the Civil Celebrant Connection (CCC), supporting and guiding celebrants within the profession. I also lead the School of Civil Celebrancy, where I support and train future celebrants to reach the National Occupational Standards through the NOCN awarding body for celebrancy. This is something I feel strongly about, helping to raise standards and support others within the profession.

Alongside my work as a celebrant, I also run a community project based in South Africa, supporting local communities. This work is very close to my heart, and I am always grateful for any support it receives.

Outside of my work, I am married and enjoy spending time with my Cavapoo, Wiggles, who brings a real sense of warmth and character to everyday life.

In 2024, I was honoured to be named Celebrant of the Year 2024/2025 at the Central England Prestige Awards, and I was humbled to receive the same recognition again in 2025. In 2025, I was also proud to receive the Celebrant of the Year award at the Northern Enterprise Awards.

While these awards mean a great deal to me, the real privilege is the trust families and couples place in me every day. That is, and always will be, the most important part of my work.

For me, this role is not just about leading a service; it is about supporting people, honouring lives, and creating moments that truly matter. It is something I feel truly honoured and humbled to do.

I hold the following qualifications.
